Time to ban dihydroxymonoxide

This just goes to show how gullible people are when they’ve had the environmental agenda forcefed to them by the left.

Thomas Sowell writes:

A woman with a petition went among the crowds attending a state fair, asking people to sign her petition demanding the banning of dihydroxymonoxide. She said it was in our lakes and streams, and now it was in our sweat and urine and tears.

She collected hundreds of signatures to ban dihydroxymonoxide — a fancy chemical name for water. [...] Much of the stupidity we see today is induced by our educational system, from the elementary schools to the universities. In a high-tech age that has seen the creation of artificial intelligence by computers, we are also seeing the creation of artificial stupidity by people who call themselves educators.

In case you missed it

The great one gave a great speech at the Reagan Library last week. Unfortunately, I missed it. Fortunately, the Ronald Reagan Foundation put it on YouTube for all to enjoy. To summarize: Mark Levin is awesome.

Um, what?

It would appear that the Speaker of the House seems to be reading the Chicago book of ethics…

Rollback?

In the previous post on this site Andrew made the point that the Conservative Party of Canada’s new budget is anything but conservative. Now there are a plethora of reasons for the size and scope of the budget that could be debated from here to kingdom come, but the unavoidable fact is that Canada’s ‘conservative’ government has not been conservative. Under the Conservative Party of Canada there has not been a rollback of the welfare state. Canada still has state-run medical care and there is no discussion over abolishing or even really reforming the system coming from the Conservative Party, as health care is seen as a political third rail. The question that arises is “is it even possible for a government to be conservative in a welfare state?” In 1955 William F. Buckley Jr, said the goal of National Review, and the conservative movement he would lead was to “stand athwart history, yelling Stop…” What do we do if we don’t stop the left?

The left has followed Norman Thomas’ plan and implemented socialism incrementally. Once an entitlement is entrenched it is all but impossible to have it repealed. In a country like Canada even a nominally conservative government will not touch the enormous welfare state. Rather, the political debate rages over who can most effectively manage the welfare state. This is not so much an indictment of the Conservative Party as it is a realistic view of  government. Most people do not have the courage to dismantle an unsustainable welfare state because they fear the political backlash. Instead, governments pile on debts, put on band aides and kick the can down the road. This can work as a quick fix, but eventually countries have to face a day of reckoning. In order to make this eventuality less painful it would behoove  conservative governments to start scaling back the government while it is still our choice. The question is, is there the political will to rollback the state? In the United States, if Obamacare passes and Democrats lose in 2010 and 2012 will the GOP have the intestinal fortitude to scrap Obamacare? Will Social Security be reformed to make it solvent? Will the precious entitlements in the budget actually be cut? One can only hope that it is still possible not just to run on a conservative platform, but to actually implement conservative solutions once in power.

Close, but no cigar

My message to the ‘conservative’ Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his government: close, but no cigar. Your ‘conservative’ budget doesn’t cut the mustard.

It’s easy to criticize Obama — a known socialist over his ridiculous, irresponsible policies. When you’re criticizing a man like Prime Minister Harper who was elected to govern as a conservative it’s tough. Has the Right completely lost hope in responsible budgets? This budget was presented as a manifesto of fiscal conservatism, but leaves me as confused as an Amish electrician.

Now, I know what you’re thinking — if this was a fiscally conservative budget there would be cuts to spending. You’re absolutely correct, the government has cut a whopping $17.6 billion from the budget! Oh yeah, that’s over five years though. The government has succeeded in cutting $3.5 billion per year in spending, from a $280.5 billion budget. Despite this, they are still running a $56 billion deficit in the first year, and $165 billion over the next five years.

Just for fun, let’s apply the government’s fiscal formula to your household:

Assume you are $90,000 in debt with annual expenses of $50,000, if the government were managing your finances, they would have trimmed a whopping $620 per year from your expenditures. However, despite that $62o reduction, they would be adding approximately $10,000 to your debt. Furthermore, they would plan for you to run a deficit for the next 5 years, adding to your debt load, and thus increasing the amount you’re paying in interest, each year.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise in a country where healthcare is paid for by the government and where the military is still using World War II sleeping bags in combat, but people labeling this sorry excuse for a budget as  being “conservative” would be similar to labeling Che Guevera as a peace-maker…not even close! Every time a child is born in Canada, they have a $15,000 debt that they’ve inherited from the government, with no politicians stepping up to the plate to pay any of it off. I say it again — time for a Canadian tea party!

Great Email

This is one of the best emails I have received as of late. Figured I’d share it with all of you, so here it is:

Here is what Obama needs set up to talk to a few school children

Not much room for kids.
Still needs to have the teleprompters.
The secret service guy in back keeps eyes out for any terrorist-type-8-year-old with tea partying parents.

Here is what the last guy needed:
